General Description

SVNH pioneered services in South Vancouver's Fraserview area as the Fraserview Area Society until Nov. 1, 1977 when it joined Association of Neighbourhood Houses of British Columbia. After 26 years we have become a gathering place and service hub for more than 4500 community members each year. In addition to developing a comprehensive collection of community services, we have developed an important role as a centre for volunteerism. We currently have more than 300 volunteers helping in all aspects of the organization.

SVNH reached an important milestone in 2003 by completing the construction of our new three-storey facility. We have been settling into the larger space and developing an expanded service hub for South Vancouver. We have been working with seniors' groups to develop a seniors' centre within the new facility and now house the South Vancouver Seniors' Network and the South Vancouver Seniors' Council. Other new services include: Hello World Out-of-School care; Building Blocks, a partnership with MOSAIC to provide an outreach program for isolated, new moms; a domestic violence outreach worker and a comprehensive multicultural family support program. Two Ministry of Children and Family Development social workers are providing intensive family support services from our site. We also continue to provide the services which we have always provided for children, youth, families, seniors as well as various settlement and language services for newcomers to our community.

We have other goals for the coming year. We are also increasing community development activities and building strong community partnerships in South Vancouver to enhance services for youth, families and seniors. Sunset and the Fraserlands are the highest priority areas for new services.

Thanks to all our supporters who have helped us to build our building and maintain a high level of community service. Special thanks to the following: The Province of British Columbia, The Government of Canada, The City of Vancouver, The United Way of the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Foundation, Alexandra Foundation, Royal Bank Financial Group, VanCity Credit Union, Air Canada, Victoria Drive Business Association, The Fraserview Rotary, BC Liquor store #87, the Victoria Drive Community Hall, Vancouver School Board, Harrison Hot Springs Resort, Vancouver Park Board, Girl Guides /Pathfinders, M&M meats, The Killarney Market and many individual donors and supporters of our fundraising events.

  ANHBC Info

  • Did you know?
    • Vancouver's first Neighbourhood House grew out of the Alexandra Orphanage, one of the province's first non-profit societies. In 1938, the facility was closed and re-opended a couple of months later as Alexandra Neighbourhood House.
    • Incorporated in 1894, the Association of Neighbourhood Houses was the 36th non-profit society in BC. Since then, our 117 year old Association has grown into an organization of eight Neighbourhood Houses and an Outdoor Centre.
    • ANHBC's NH's and Camps serve more than 100,000 people a year, or 17% of the population of Vancouver - that's half of the Translink passenger rides on any given day!
